Mirry Music
Bringing Back a Lost Voice
Musician Tom Fraser discovered an old, scratched record of piano symphonies recorded by his Great-Aunt Mirry – music she had kept secret from her family. Mirry never received any accolades for her work but enjoyed the act of creating work for herself. Although she died in the 1980s, her uncovered music will live on.
Background
Brief
Together with his brother-in-law, Simon Tong, Tom reworked and remixed Mirry’s compositions, creating an album that celebrates Mirry and her work. Whistlejacket were asked to assist with the design for this album keeping the visual identity authentic and personal to Mirry's life and her rediscovered music.
Review
“Mirabel was her name. It means ‘of wondrous beauty.’ Appropriate words for a special collection of songs.”

Solution
Whistlejacket developed the identity for the album, using handwriting samples from Mirry’s memorabilia and personal collections, extracting individual letters to form a wordmark that is personal to Mirry herself. Mirry’s photographs, stereoscopic imagery and video footage, were carefully curated and used across the album, as well as the accompanying website and social media platforms. This gave us the opportunity to portray Mirry and her music through her memories and moments of her life.
